Impact, From the Ground Up

Impact, From the Ground Up

Our north star has always been farm-level impact. That means paying farmers equitably and building financial stability for the people behind every spice—those who champion flavor, steward the land, and uplift their communities.

How we set prices

When setting prices with farmers, we consider how we are building new supply chains versus operating within existing ones. The following examples represent some of the different ways we set pricing with our farmers.

True Cost of Growing

Our Madhur Jaggery is grown by Kantilal Randive, a soil health expert cultivating organic sugarcane in Maharashtra’s industrial belt. Diaspora Spice Co.’s role involved minimal adjustments to enhance quality, ensuring adherence to the natural process of growing and producing jaggery powder.

Providing a Market and Maximizing Quality

Cultivated by Abraham and Chachu Chacko in a sustainable wild food forest, our Baraka Cardamom defies the norm in a region known for heavy pesticide use. While commodity markets prioritize appearance, Diaspora Spice Co. values maximum flavor and ethical cultivation, providing a premium market for this natural gem.

Disrupting a System

The Agariya community have been harvesting salt for generations, and face challenging conditions in Gujarat’s salt pans, with no legal protection or land ownership. As salt has increasingly become a commodity, their labor is increasingly devalued. Through paying a premium, we can enable them to purchase essential safety gear and to improve their livelihoods.
Diaspora Living Wage

Diaspora Living Wage

We pay what we believe to be a living wage: an average of 2.5x the commodity price across our supply chain, so our farm partners can continue to grow naturally and regeneratively with us.

Adding Value On The Farm

Adding Value On The Farm

When possible we offer financial support so farm partners can create on-farm processing units, as this adds value and allows us to pay higher prices.

Harvest Advances

Harvest Advances

Over 50% of Indian farmers are stuck in cycles of debt. We offer harvest advances so partners can cover costs without high-interest loans. Since 2022, we’ve partnered with Kiva to help fund this work.

Growing with the Earth

Growing with the Earth

Tropical forest in Kandy, Sri Lanka

Our farm partners span across a diverse set of terrains, from the mountainous regions of Pampore in India-administered Kashmir to the lush, tropical rain forests of Kandy, Sri Lanka. Sadly but unsurprisingly, we found that soil degradation, unpredictable climate patterns, increases in pests, and worsening socio-political conditions are challenges shared across geographies. For this reason, it is more important than ever for us to support producers focusing on regenerative practices that increase their land’s resilience to climate change.
